Best Academics Curriculum

Curriculum 

The curriculum at Oakfield College enables our learners to follow a vocational pathway and continue to build on literacy and numeracy skills. Learners complete Functional Skills Accreditation in English and Maths and are provided with a PSHE and ICT curriculum that meets the changing needs of the learners as they grow. 

Vocational Pathways are diverse. Learners can choose from subjects such as Health and Social care, Landbased Learning, Performing Skills and Hospitality and Catering. Some learners also access an individualised Life Skills Program. 

College Enrichment

At Oakfield we enable all learners to achieve high standards academically, but also socially and personally. Through our College Enrichment programme, learners are given the opportunity to develop interpersonal, creativity, team work, independence and effective communication skills. Learners get to complete each activity over the three years of college via a termly carousel.

Life Skills

The aim of Life Skills is to develop learner self-regulation, independence and organisation skills. By the end of the course, learners become more self-sufficient to prepare themselves for when they leave Oakfield. During the enrichment programme learners learn how to clean, dry and maintain clothing. Learners are encouraged to make healthy choices while being taught how to make simple meals. Each session finishes with learners completing a physical challenge that could include; the daily mile walk, aerobics, ultimate Frisbee etc.

Gym and Swim

At Gym & Swim learners are given the opportunity to use the facilities of a local off site establishment with the aim developing fitness to achieve a healthy lifestyle. Learners follow simple exercise regimes to help develop self-confidence. Access to the facilities during school hours is free.

World of Work

World of Work is a transition based enrichment that aims to develop learners on their journey for when they leave Oakfield. Learners get to experience different industries to experience what work is like within these sectors. The aim is to develop learner choices and career aspirations.

News Team

The News Team are responsible for working collaboratively to create the weekly parent newsletter. Learners get to experience the world of journalism. They have to meet deadlines, create stories, and format the layout of the document before proof-reading, printing and distributing the newsletter. Learners get to develop organisation skills, team work and written communication skills. Each newsletter shared in both print and digital form via the school website. Once each newsletter is created, learners get the opportunity to develop radio production skills to create their own podcast version of desert island discs.

Outdoor Pursuits

Outdoor Pursuits aim to develop skills needed to complete the annual Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Skills include route planning, map reading and tent preparation. Each week learners plan a new route including visits to local amenities including walks around Borsdane Woods. Learners have to work as a team to plan, motivate and support each other during the mini expeditions.

DofE- Expedition  

In order to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award, learners at Oakfield College are given the opportunity to take part in an expedition.  

The expedition gives young people the chance to be part of a team, promotes resilience and independence and encourages learners to use their own initiative and problem solving skills. 

Hinning House/ Low Bank Ground  

Learners of all abilities are given the opportunity to take part in various adventurous activities including Kayaking, Gill scrambling and orienteering in a residential setting. Independent, life and team working skills are developed in a supported and secure environment.  

Art Attack

Art Attack is a project led program that aims to develop creativity and imagination through art and design. Students create artwork and textile sculptures after exploring the influences of different artists. This year there has been a focus on ‘upcycling’ to support school in their achievement of the ECO-Award.

Enterprise  

Preparation for adulthood is a large part of the experience offered at Oakfield College. The Enterprise Curriculum together with various theme weeks enables our students the chance to learn and develop skills required in working life. Tasks are based around working together, completing jobs on a work schedule, working safely with tools and equipment, working to a deadline and customer service. Our learners are all given the chance to use these skills in a practical setting at Enterprise events.
